THE HON STEPHEN JONES MP

ASSISTANT TREASURER

MINISTER FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES

MEMBER FOR WHITLAM

Latest figures show more than 3,000 Shellharbour and Southern Highlands residents were victims of the former Coalition Government’s Robodebt program.

The unlawful Income Compliance Program known as Robodebt was an online, automated debt collection program started by the Liberals and Nationals in July 2015. It was later concluded after a successful class action which forced the then government to cease the scheme.

Robodebt unlawfully raised debts of just under $1.8 billion against more than 430,000 vulnerable Australians. There were over 134,000 Robodebt customers in New South Wales, the highest number of any State or Territory.

Quotes attributable to Member for Whitlam, Stephen Jones:

“3,277 local residents were affected by this unlawful program under the former Morrison Government. It was a travesty and can never happen again.”

“Robodebt hurt many innocent Australians and these victims have my deepest sympathy.”
