Local Families Face Massive Cuts Again

12 February 2016

Once again, the Turnbull Government has turned its back on families, voting to cut family tax benefits which will affect more than 18,000 local families, say Illawarra Federal MPs Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones.

Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals have again voted to cut:

  • Family Tax Benefit supplements for thousands of local families; and

  • Family Tax Benefit Part B payments for local single parents

Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird said thousands of local families will lose their Family Tax Benefit Supplements of $726 per child in Family Tax Benefit Part A and $354 per family in Family Tax Benefit Part B.

There are more than 18,000 local families who will rely on these payments to make ends meet. With cost of living continuing to rise, Malcolm Turnbull continues to attack families household budgets.

These unfair cuts will hurt parents and children throughout the Illawarra who are already struggling. We have seen a change in leader but we have not seen a change in attitude - this Government is simply continuing to target the most vulnerable in our community, Ms Bird said.

Stephen Jones said that families doing it tough were being targeted by an out of touch government.

A single parent family in the Illawarra with a couple of kids in secondary school stands to lose around $5,000 a year because of Mr Turnbulls plan to cut family tax benefits and the Schoolkids Bonus.

Low and middle income families with two kids in secondary school will be around $2,600 a year worse off because of cuts to the Schoolkids Bonus and Family Tax Benefit Supplements. It isnt good enough.

Labor voted against Mr Turnbulls unfair cuts to families and will continue to oppose the cuts in the Senate.
