so Christine Milne is on TV deploring the conditions on Manus Island, and mourning one inmates death.
Why then, are MPs like yourself not doing similar for the 5 parents per day that suicide due to the devastating emotional and financial inequities and Kafkaesque deterministic structuralism of both the CSA and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia?
The human rights breaches and overt with-a-smile discrimination are openly on show during FCC proceedings, should any reporter or observer care to come along. However, as any estranged parent learns, the taboos associated with child custody issues are extraordinary – there may as well be a Gulag set up in Wilton for us, as there is NO support from Federal, State or Local Government, and even good friends immediately assign leper status and in some cases question why one is “still around!”.
Estranged fathers have one representative in the Federal Government. Barry Williams, an aging campaigner who lost his part-time Assistant and office space under Labour’s watch, and is drip fed dollars to avoid total exclusion of the Lone Father’s Association from the political arena.
Combined, the CSA, FCC and Legal Aid are responsible for more deaths in men aged 25-44 years than any other single cause. Unsurprising then, that suicide was the number one cause of death (19.9% of total) in 2008 with road accidents a distant second (10.4%) for this demographic (ABS Aust. Soc. Trends, 4102.0 ).
What the #$%@ is the reason for government after goverment not only accepting this “demogricide”, but giving the CSA and legal aid absolute protection behind untouchable legislation? Beyond Blue does excellent work, but that is treating the would and not preventing the injury.
The family law system is corrupt at every discernible level. A primary carer can tear up a $50,000 Court Order by deciding (no reason necessary) to contravene; i.e., withhold the children from Court Ordered time with the other parent. There is no recourse.
Inexplicably, the Court cannot enforce their own Court Orders, and the police need obvious indications of violence or sexual abuse to intervene. The only lawful option available is to go back to court. During this second long period of exclusion from your own children for no valid reason other than calumny, one thinks of terrible things. Reports of a parent driving the car with children into a dam, or jumping off a bridge with child strapped to their chest suddenly become comprehensible when previously abominable. This is the suicide red zone, which, as the media has recently, (unusually), shown to often include familicides.
One death on Manus Island gets Milne on the box. Around 1800 deaths per year, with disturbing constancy in Australia, and including the murders of children and ex-partners – no politicians on TV. Where is the humanity?
I have survived on belief in principle and expectation of justice. The Court will soon decide the outcome of this expensive, protracted and completely unnecessary case which was initiated in February 2012. Justice will be meted out. I honestly hope that the Court is the one to execute it.
