MALCOLM TURNBULL PRESIDES OVER ILLAWARRA SCHOOL FUNDING CRISIS

Stephen and Tanya Plibersek at St John's

At a meeting today with teachers, parents and staff at St John’s Catholic Parish Primary School in Dapto, the Deputy Labor Leader, Tanya Plibersek and the Member for Whitlam, Stephen Jones, heard first-hand about the terrible impact of Malcolm Turnbull’s funding cuts on the Catholic school community in the Illawarra.

Mr Turnbull has cut $17 billion from schools.

Over the next two years alone schools in the Catholic system like St John’s in Dapto, are hit with about 13 per cent of Malcolm Turnbull’s cuts.

As a result of the Liberals’ cuts, some low-fee Catholic schools have had to raise their fees, and some schools could be forced to close altogether.

At today’s visit, Ms Plibersek and Mr Jones heard about the need for funding certainty for parents and their kids.

Under the Liberals, the students and schools that need the most support (particularly public schools and Catholic schools) cop the biggest cuts.  This isn’t fair and shows Mr Turnbull is completely out of touch.

Labor supports choice for parents – that’s why we’ll protect public schools and low-fee Catholic schools from Malcolm Turnbull’s cuts.

We will restore every dollar of the $17 billion Mr Turnbull has cut from Australian schools.

Unlike the Liberals, Labor believes providing our kids with a quality education prepares them to lead successful lives.

Labor’s extra school funding will mean more teachers, more individual attention for our kids, and more help with the basics such as reading, writing, and maths.

Malcolm Turnbull can’t seem find $17 billion to properly fund schools, but he can find $17 billion to give the big banks a tax handout.  His priorities are all wrong.

Labor will always put schools before banks.
