LOCAL FAMILIES HIT BY CUTS TO FAMILY TAX BENEFITS

21 May 2015

Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones have today warned that Tony Abbotts second Budget will hit local families with unfair cuts to Family Tax Benefits and new cuts to Paid ParentalLeave.

This Budget is just as unfair as the last budget when it comes to families. There are 7,432 families in the seat of Cunningham and 9,455 families in the seat of Throsby who rely on the Family Tax Benefit B.

Sharon Bird said that this latest federal Budget would come at the expense of the family budget.

Mr Abbott wants to kick families off Family Tax Benefit B when their youngest child turns six and freeze Family Tax Benefit rates.

A single income family on $65,000 a year will be as much as $6,000 a year worse off. Unfortunately, low and middle income families will be hardest hit.

Stephen Jones said that Tony Abbotts planned cuts to Paid Parental Leave will make around 80,000 new parents each year up to $11,500 worse off.

This cut will mean that new parents in the Illawarra will get to spend less time with their newborn babies in those precious early weeks.

Tony Abbotts rhetoric on families may have changed but his cuts to families havent. Labor will stand up for families by opposing Mr Abbotts cuts to Family Tax Benefits and his cruel cuts to Paid Parental Leave.
