Labor welcomes the news that the Government is acting on quad bike safety standards.
The implementation of the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission’s recommendations for mandatory new safety standards in Australian Consumer Law will save lives.
The ACCC’s safety recommendations have been supported by the National Farmers Federation, the union movement, medical practitioners, international experts, and rural communities across Australia.
Today’s announcement follows sustained community pressure and a strong campaign by the National Farmers Federation, the Australian Workers Union, rural communities, and families of victims in the wake of significant tragedies.
Every life lost is one too many.
It is disappointing that Michael Sukkar has taken this long to act on this important safety issue.
By the time Australians head home from work today, as many as six people will have been to emergency departments as a result of quad bike accidents. Over 230 Australians have died in quad bike accidents since 2001, including seven this year to date, and more than 650 people are hospitalised every year following quad bike accidents.
