Iron Boat Day - Port Kembla 13 February 2010

Iron Boat Day celebrates the history of the BHP fleet and the contributions of the workers that crewed them. ironboat_crowd_300w.jpg

Braving grey skies and persistent rain, I joined about a hundred other guests of the Maritime Union of Australia at Port Kembla for the inaugural Iron Boat Day.

The iron boats as they were known, played an integral role in Australian history through peace and wartime.

Speakers included Jennie George MP and Paddy Crumlin, MUA National Secretary.

There were plenty of stories and familiar faces from the trade union movement in the Illawarra. The day also provided an opportunity for many retired sailors to catch up with each other and reminisce on their seafaring days.

With special thanks to Gary Keane from the MUA for the invitation.
