Today I hold this miner’s lamp as a symbol of my heritage, my beliefs and my aspirations in this place. The miner’s lamp was invented in 1815 by Cornish chemist Sir Humphry Davy, who refused a patented, saying his sole objective was to serve the cause of humanity. The Davy lamp lit the way for underground miners, making their incredibly dangerous work at least some small degree safer.  Continue reading
